When the Shofar blows
Set aside the fiftieth year as holy and declare liberty throughout the land for all of its inhabitants. It is to be a year of Jubilee for you.
Leviticus 25.10
This Jubilee Year is a time of renewal and grace, reminding us of God’s faithfulness and calling us to journey together in faith. The English word jubilee comes from the Hebrew word yōḇel, which refers to the ram’ horn (the shofar) that was sounded once every 50 years to herald a special time.
To ancient Israel jubilee meant God restored the land that had been lost due to hard times. In Jesus, God restores not only the physical conditions but ultimately the relationship with his people. Therefore jubilee becomes a celebration of grace that connects creation and salvation, fall and redemption.
As the anointed, we belong to the community of God’s people and the invitation of this Jubilee year is returning to our spiritual inheritance and taking up our place in the community of God’s people. In the coming months, we will have various opportunities to come together as a pilgrim community, deepening our faith and unity. We encourage you to make use of these moments of grace.
Let us gather in joy and gratitude as we embark on this Jubilee journey together.
