Ash Wednesday: Letting God Work in Us During Lent

Joel 2:12-18, 2 Corinthians 5:20—6:2, Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

When Lent begins, we often focus on what we need to do—praying more, fasting, giving to others. These are important, but today, I invite you to see Lent differently: not just as a time for us to act, but as a time to let God work in us.

In the second reading, St. Paul urges us not to neglect the grace we have already received. God is at work in our lives. He is constantly pouring out His grace. Yet, too often, we rely only on our own efforts, as if holiness depended solely on us.

Lent is not just about what we do for God. It’s about making room for what God wants to do in us. It’s a time to let Him heal our hearts, strengthen our faith, and shape us into His image. Paul reminds us that God, who has begun a good work in us, will bring it to completion. But this transformation isn’t achieved by sheer willpower—it’s God’s work in us.

How do we allow God to work in us this Lent? Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—not as obligations, but as openings to grace. In prayer, we don’t just speak to God; we let Him speak to us. In fasting, we don’t just give something up; we create space for God. In giving, we allow His generosity to flow through us.

Lent isn’t about trying harder—it’s about surrendering more. If we let God work in us, He will not only change us during these forty days but transform us for a lifetime.
